In its collaboration with Citrine Informatics, Dorfner sought to shorten the development time for new formulations, identify new applications for the raw materials it produces, and take environmental considerations into account more systematically from the product development stage onward.

How does this process work?
Data
Dorfner has a wealth of historical data, detailed process parameters that have been documented in conjunction with a wide range of practical experiments. This data can be used effectively with the AI platform.
Modeling
Dorfner is able to model the functional properties, costs and energy consumption of various potential materials resulting from different processes in kaolin processing. A key factor is to enable the AI to understand and use information about the complex sequence of refining and calcination processes.
Change management
The AI platform is designed so that product experts without a data science background can use it after minimal training. Supported by the cooperation partner Citrine, the product experts were able to work with the platform quickly and the benefits were recognized. They also appreciate being able to gain different perspectives on their scientific field in this way.

Production optimization What is possible in production?
Production lines can be specifically analyzed and optimized to use energy and resources more efficiently. By adjusting plant parameters, it is possible to identify opportunities for efficiency gains that can help reduce energy consumption and the associated CO₂ emissions.
Product optimization Differentiation and consistency
The Dorfner team developed a new DORKAFILL® filler that was specially tailored to a specific end product.
The team was able to adjust the production settings according to the kaolin source in order to respond to the natural variability of the properties. This resulted in a higher quality and more consistent product.
Calcination parameters can be optimized to maximize operating efficiency with different fuel types.
Increasing productivity Added value for the customer
By modeling hypothetical ingredients and their performance in end products, the team was able to conduct “virtual tests” of new products. This reduced the number of experiments required and shortened the development cycles.
The Dorfner team was able to respond more quickly to customer inquiries and act as a competent partner, which improves customer satisfaction and cooperation.
